Let them eat cake......

Just a little play on words because you really wouldn't want to eat this cake! This past week I made a diaper cake for my sister-in-laws upcoming baby shower. The theme is Breakfast at Tiffany's and we are using Tiffany blue, pink and some paisley's for texture. Here are the instructions on how to make the diaper cake....I have to say it was a lot more simple than I thought it would be!

Here is what you need to get started:
120 diapers (I used pampers swaddlers in size 1 and 2)
straight pins, around 10-15
Large bottle of baby powder(I used Johnson & Johnson)
12 oz. baby bottle(I used the cheap Walgreens brand)
150 rubber bands in different sizes ( I found packages at Target for $0.49 and purchased 3 and had a lot left over!)
4 yards or decorative ribbon
1 roll sheer ribbon(I got this from the wedding department at Hobby Lobby)

1. Roll all diapers and wrap with a rubber band to secure.

2. Start by putting the baby powder in the center and wrapping a large rubber band around the bottle once. Start putting the diapers inside the large rubber band until the first layer around the baby powder is complete.
3. Depending on how large you would like the cake, repeat step 2, only putting the large rubber band around the existing layers. On the bottom tier I used somewhere around 50 diapers.

4. Continue this process until you get to the top of the baby powder. At this point secure the bottom of the baby bottle to the top of the baby powder. (I used double stick tape)

5. Continue making 3rd and 4th tiers of the cake. Depending on how tightly you wrap the diapers will determine the exact number of diapers you will use.

I then went to Hobby Lobby and purchased 4 fake pink hydrangea flowers. You can use any color or flower, just make sure the flower is large enough to cover the top of the top tier. I also purchased the ribbon used.

Decorating:
-I started by wrapping the sheer ribbon around each layer and securing with 2 push pins.
-I then cut the decorative ribbon to size and used double stick tape on the back to secure it to the sheer ribbon. I also secured this ribbon to the cake with 2 push pins. I secured both sets of ribbon in the same place on the cake.
- After each layer was decorated with ribbon, I placed the flowers over the spot where the ribbon was secured and placed two or three push pins in each flower to secure it in place.
- The flowers originally came with stems but are easily removed when I pulled on the bloom.
- The smaller flowers were also attached to the stem and were removed in the same manner.
- The smaller flowers had a small stem in them which I placed between the layers...

VIOLA!!! There you have your diaper cake! Please feel free to email me at abbyitheewed@yahoo.com with any questions! Cheers!
